new season, new hair

gareth-013-copypantene-dinkus1Gareth Chitty’s eponymously named salon in the heart of Grey Lynn buzzes with the sound of hairdryers blowing, scissors clipping and wash basins sloshing. While considered boutique, the stylish premises still has that  local feel which is a nice change from the bustling salons Gareth worked at in London where he’s worked on celebrities Jodie Kidd, Sophie Dahl and Sacha Baron Cohen (Bruno). He answers your questions about hair…

Q: My hair feels dull and lifeless and I’m bored with it. What can I do for the new season?

A: Firstly are you heavy handed with heat styling tools? Hair becomes damaged for many reasons - coloring, drying, hot tools, over washing. The best way to prevent hair damage is using the correct products to nourish and protect hair.

A good shampoo and conditioner is really important - it’s the basis of having a great hair style. If your hair is in optimum condition your hairdresser can then get the best out of it, giving the best style and allowing you to do your hair easier. Meaning you’ll also be happier with it.

This doesn’t mean that you always have to spend top dollar, while salon products are excellent, you can also buy some really good shampoo and conditioners from the supermarket, like the newly released Pantene Nourished Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. These are perfect for giving you shiny hair. Shiny hair is healthy hair - this is because the cuticle is in good condition and can then reflect light.

Hair that becomes dull and lifeless is often the victim of overuse and heat tool abuse. Conditioning the hair is key - this closes the hair shaft after washing, protecting the hair from the elements. But it’s also important to remember not to over wash your hair - this will take away the natural oil and expose your hair and scalp to the rigors of drying and daily life.

Next season brunettes are rich, dark, chocolatey browns and blondes are mixed with coppers and strawberry tones. Length seems to be in the ‘bob’ family and fringes are making a statement too. This is great for those who are time poor - the shorter the length, the quicker it is to dry and style. Always dry the top and front area first so if you run out of time, from the front, you look finished.

If you’re needing some inspiration look at celebrities - Katie Holmes’ hair always seems to be looking healthy and styled. She experiments quite a bit with her length and it looks sexy and mature. Halle Berry suits her hair shorter and Jenny McCarthy has a fantastic blonde bob.

Hi, I’ve got dark blonde hair naturally (aka mouse). I’ve been getting it coloured darker and want to grow out all the colour to my natural state. Is there any easy way to do this, or do I just have to go cold turkey and wear plenty of head scarves and hats? Cheers
