Eco Ethical beauty

think pink…

AwarenessOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there are plenty of ways you can support this worthwhile cause. Sadly New Zealand still has high rates of breast cancer in the world, so the more money raised, the better to help find a cure. Over the next few days I will be sharing what beauty companies are doing.

Have you, or someone close to you, experienced breast cancer? What was it that helped them get through it?

My grandmother had a double mastectomy at the age of 66. I was a teenager at the time and it didn’t really occur to me how brave or important this was. My mother (52) has regular checks and last year had a scare which luckily was nothing to worry about. I however have been quite blasé about the whole thing and have never had a proper breast exam. I was intending to have one in August when my next smear was due (they do them together here in Australia which is handy) – however I accidentally fell pregnant in June and the doctor says there is no point doing one now due to the changes your breasts go through. Impending motherhood has however finally made me realise the importance of regular breast checks for anyone – not just those with breast cancer in the family – and I am now desperate to get these things checked and am annoyed with myself that I was to busy/selfish/ignorant to care before.

My sister had cancer, although not breast cancer. It was so scary for all of us but would have been the scariest for her. I think with the help and support of family she has got through. And the power of positive thought.
