Fabulous Fly Away Frizz
December 15, 2009

We asked Richard Kavanagh How To get the fabulous locks from Sonia Rykel’s party in Paris for H&M.
It’s party season and for those of you with a desire to really make an impact, this style says ‘wow! Look at me now!’ and I mean right bloody now!
INGREDIENTS: Your hair at least shoulder length or longer (clean and blowdried). A packet of french pins (you need to be able to bend them with your fingers). A tail comb. Sectioning clips. Heat active Texturiser (I like Redken Fabricate 03). Flat Iron (there’s only one brand in my book). Light hold hair spray (I like redken Workforce 09). A friend to help (possibly the most vital ingredient!)
TIME REQUIRED60 to 90 mins
METHOD
- Have your friend start at the back of your head. Using your tail comb, take a horizontal parting approximately 1″ from your hairline (nape). Clip the rest of the hair up and out of the way with sectioning clips.
- Using the tail comb subdivide this small section of hair into 1″ squares. Starting at one side comb one of these small sections straight down. Spray lightly with Fabricate. Take a french pin and holding it V upright approximately 2″ away from the scalp and start tightly wrapping the hair in and out of the prongs in a figure 8 pattern. Once you have the hair woven into the pin, take one ‘leg’ of the pin and fold it over once so that it looks like a figure 4. Place the hot flat iron on the entire package of hair and pin and make sure you heat it thoroughly all the way through. Continue along the bottom row making sure each pin is sitting at the same distance from the scalp.
- Take another horizontal parting using your tail comb approximately 1″ above the fist section and parallel to it. Repeat the same action but this time, make sure the package is sitting on top of your previous row of packages. Decide where you’d like to part your hair for this style and keep working in horizontal sections, subdividing into 1″ squares all the way up the head to your parting. Each section you need to adjust the length of the ’stem’ or straight part so that each row of packages is sitting stacked upon the previous row.
- Once you’ve set the hair, you’ll need to take all the pins out and brush it out. I recommend starting at the bottom, taking an entire row out at a time and then brushing it out before moving up to the next row. To take the packages out, simply untwist the french pin so that it is V-shaped again and slide it out the bottom of the package. Then, using the tail of your tail comb as a pick start to loosen up the set section by section before combing it into a magnificent frizz!!! Give it a good brush through once you’ve taken all the pins out and fix it with a little Redken Workforce 09 just to hold the shape.
To get this style out, you’ll need to give it a good shampoo with a moisturising shampoo and condition as usual. You’d be surprised considering how crazy it looks, that it’s really not that hard on your hair… it’s just a really tight set!
