See ya later hair
December 9, 2009
Hair removal is at the forefront of my mind at the moment - now that the weather is somewhat warmer and singlets, shorts and minis make their way into my wardrobe I simply can’t get away with letting anything sprout. It seems like everyday I reach for the razor in the shower.
While I’m pedantic about getting regular bikini waxes, when it comes to under my arms or my legs, I just do it myself. Which is fine in winter when I can get away with letting it go a bit, but come summer, it’s pretty much a daily event.
Waxing is superior to shaving - it removes the entire hair follicle so you don’t have to constantly snip it off at the ends and over time it weakens the hair so much that it goes from being a tough, thick strand to thinner and weaker (and yes this is why we get ingrown hairs but more about that later).
Sugar waxing is, according to Sonja Sciarone, a superior form of waxing. Sugar waxing is a gel made of natural ingredients that is applied to the skin and then ripped off removing hair.
‘Sugaring is a very popular form of hair removal in Europe but here in New Zealand most women still shave resulting in prickly, rapid re-growth that can ruin a beautiful summer tan,’ she explains. ‘Sugaring is also less painful than waxing because the sugar only sticks to the hair, not the skin.’
BodEze sugar wax kits are New Zealand made and come in range of fragrances but each contain sugar, kiwifruit, lemon juice and aloe vera. They are great for those with sensitive skin and are water soluble - so easy to clean up. While waxing itself is never pain free, this is a slightly more natural alternative.
If you’re a regular user of fake tan, this method should hopefully preserve your fake tan longer. Don’t wax and apply fake tan on the same day though - you must wait for the follicles to settle so wax the day after.
There are four packs in the BodEze range: Body Beautiful (kiwifruit fragrance), $24.90; Sportz (citrus fragrance), $19.90; Facial Gel (watermelon extract and fragrance), $19.90; and Downunder (blackberry), $19.90. The first three packs come with special eyebrow applicators and the Downunder bikini pack comes with fun stencils so you can shape your lady garden, ahem, however you wish. Fun.
You can buy BodEze online, at The Warehouse and selected pharmacies.
I have FIVE Body Beautiful BodEze packs to give away.
To go into the draw simply write below your worst or most embarrassing hair removal experience - the best five stories will win. Please note you need to be registered for our weekly emails (coming soon) to enter.
Competition closes Friday 18th December with the winners announced on Monday 21st December.

i used a razor to trim my bikinni line but ended up all wonky so had to do it all with a razor, not very comfortable when it starts growing back.
well that would have to be when I decided to try and wax “down there”…..having never done this before it was difficult as you all must know! NEVER AGAIN! I basically stuck myself to the bath and had to have the hot water tap on “down there” to melt the wax! lets just say it left things in more of a mess than before and the fact that I had difficulty walking for the next few days didn’t help! I now only wax parts less delicate and leave that “part” to the professionals~!
Okay - well I am going to tell a ‘friend’s’ most embarrassing hair removal story in the hope that I can win on her behalf. It was kind of embarrassing for me too through because….. I gave my lovely friend a eye lash & brow tint and a brow tidy. I thought it was a really lovely gift. However…. when she went to the beauty salon to get it done.. they took half of the skin under he eyebrow with it. It was a disaster… Embarrassing for everyone really, me (I gave it to her) the salon (because I don’t think she will ever go back) and my poor friend (because she had her best friends leaving party that weekend and she looked like she had had the biff!)
My sister and I were getting ready for a big night out. She had a habit of ‘borrowing’ my products but this time, it didn’t pay off! She came out of the bathroom and said “YUCK, that hair gel of yours is disgusting! It smelt horrible and was all greasy”. I didn’t have hairgel so asked her “what one?”. She came back holding my hair REMOVAL gel I’d bought to try on my legs!! I have never laughed so hard in my life - her crying screaming panic when I told her to “read the packet”.. watching as she ran madly around frantically trying to get it out was hilarious - although scary. Her hair did all stay put!
NEVER, try waxing your armpits if you dont know what you are doing! … I learnt that the hard way in my teen years… the wax a tad too hot scoulding the skin… applied WAY too thickly!!! … finally applying the wax strip probably not quickly enough… nervously standing infront of the mirror with my arm raised in the air, teeth clenched… then after chickening out a couple of times… one swift… RrrrIP!!!… eyes bulging, only to reveal, half the hair is still there and dots of BLOOD start appearing… oh so so tragic… luckily I later decided to read instructions first and have realised legs and arms are far more easier!
It was my Hens Party, a week before my wedding, thank goodness! It was in London and my friends and I went to a posh hotel to use the beauty salon, swimming pool, spa and all the extras that come with it.
Most of us had a massage, facial, manicure and a few had a waxing session, me included! As the “Hen”, I thought it wise to get my eyebrows nicely shaped in preperation for the big day!
However, during the waxing I was telling the girl that the wax felt too hot and was stinging and my eyes were starting to water! She started muttering something about red, shiny and blood!!!!
So, the outcome was that I spent the evening at a fab Medieval Feast, dressed in my best gear with all my friends, sporting 2 big, red panda eyes and a burnt strip across the top of my brows and down between my eyes!
Moral of the story - NEVER accept that the trainee is trained enough!!!!
I used to have a hatred for hair, hair anywhere even if it is so tiny you can’t see it. I decided the hair on my upper lip was too noticable so I hair removal creamed it off. My boyfriend later pointed out I had a bald spot on my lip. I was so embarassed I lied and said I had accidently burn’t it off!
I went to a beauty salon and got my eyebrows waxed. Turned out I was allergic to the wax, got blisters and had to walk around like that till it went away.
I forgot to lock the bathroom door when experimenting with hair removal cream for the first time. Imagine my embarrassment when my male flatmate walked into to find me, pants off, with big blobs of hair removal cream dabbed all over my bikini zone! Not a good look!
