When Elizabeth Arden teamed up with Allergan a few years back to produce PREVAGE the world took notice. This strangely coloured (orange) cream was touted the newest, most prolific, solution to wage war against wrinkles. Despite its hefty price tag ($270), bottles of the idebenone infused lotion, marched out the doors.
My mother in law used it to such great success she almost became a saleswoman for it - while getting her hair done at Marilyn’s in Remuera she was asked what skincare she used and so she professed proudly to all her new discovery. It was true - she looked radiant.
Yet my sister-in-law trialled it and broke out with a rash (she was pregnant at the time though), the same thing happened to my mother. Which doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything wrong with the product - lots of people react to various creams all the time. Skincare is extremely personal - what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another - its all a matter of trial and error. If you have had a reaction to Prevage I suggest asking for a small sample vial as the formula is new and improved and you might find it ok (I would suggest you do this with any skin care). I used it, loved it and escaped any adverse reactions. The Prevage Eye Cream rates as one of my all-time favourite products.
Since the silver cylinder debuted Prevage has undergone many variations and the newest has just arrived - Prevage Day Ultra Protection Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30. So what’s different?
They’ve formulated this popular serum with a high SPF to provide a top EPF (environmental protection factor) of 95. Meaning it not only hydrates but also offers broad spectrum sun protection (an absolute must for us down-under).
According to this article Idebenone is a ’synthetic variant of one of life’s most essential biochemicals Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10)’. Co Q10 is an important antioxidant and according to smartskincare.com is a ‘vitamin-like natural compound found in all aerobic organisms, plays a pivotal role in the cellular energy production and is also an effective anti-oxidant.’
Even applied topically this free-radical scavenging ingredient is effective - it protects cells from damage thus slowing down the process of deteriation.
Prevage Day Ultra Protection Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30 is $240. On counter now.
Have you tried Prevage? What did you think?

Whilst pregnant, I sampled Prevage in ‘orange’ form and loved it, glowing complexion and all. Having rather awful and sensitive skin at the time, I was desperate for anything to work and suprisingly did not react to it. Saying that though, as I am in my early Thirties, I decided against using Prevage as an everyday cream but will definitely consider it later down the years.
